Patrick S. Gilmore

Irish-born composer and bandmaster (1829-1892) best known for writing the lyrics to ‘When Johnny Comes Marching Home’ while a Union soldier during the Civil War. Vintage fountain pen signature and sentiment, “In the middle of the Atlantic on board the ‘City of Berlin’ May 11, 1878. How delightful it is to say to a lovely young lady. Yours truly, P. S. Gilmore,” on an off-white 5.25 x 3 album page, with Gilmore adding four bars of music. A diagonal and a vertical fold and some edge toning, otherwise fine condition. RRAuction COA.
