Description

Alexander Helwig Wyant

American landscape painter (1836–1892) who achieved distinction for his subtle, delicate treatment of scenes in the Adirondacks and Catskills and of peaceful rural landscapes. ALS signed “A. H. Wyant,” one onionskin page, 8 x 10, December 3, 1866. Wyant writes his mother and father from New York City. In part: “I wish very much to come home now & stay till Christmas, but I have not the means…I hope these little bits of money may be useful to you, as your only means of support is now keeping boarders. You must not allow want of money to stand in the way, as I can always send some. If you require more than I send tell me so at once. As for tax money I will attend to that. I hope before long I shall be able to come home & have a long talk with you. Pay out money for anything which will make you more comfortable, & I will replace it from my own funds, which you know are as much yours as mine.” In very good condition with intersecting horizontal and vertical folds, scattered toning, a block of uniform toning to the central horizontal panel, and slight mirroring of text.
