Color 9.25 x 12 collotype print of the famous unfinished portrait of Roosevelt by Shoumatoff, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To Laura Palmer / Elizabeth Shoumatoff, July 30th, 1951. Warm Spring, GA.” Matted and framed to an overall size of 15 x 18. In fine condition. A friend of Lucy Rutherford's, Elizabeth Shoumatoff, had been commissioned to paint a portrait of President Roosevelt. Sketching the president as he chatted and read papers, Shoumatoff initially painted a small portrait of the President. It was agreed that the President would sit for her again at a later time and that she would then paint a much larger portrait. She was invited back to Warm Springs, Georgia and arrived on April 9, 1945, to spend the weekend and paint the larger portrait. At noon on April 12, 1945, as she sketched and painted, the President reached for his head complaining of a terrible headache, collapsed and lost consciousness. FDR was pronounced dead at 3:35 P.M.
