American writer (1835–1921) remembered for her novels, poems, and detective stories. AQS, signed “Harriet Prescott Spofford,” on two adjoined 5 x 8 pages. Spofford writes out all three stanzas of her poem ‘Blind.’ In part: “He knows the summer comes, for now; The pleasant south wind seeks his brow; He hears the twitter and the song; Of building birds the whole day long. For him the violet breathes and blows; The pansy's perfume comes and goes ; And hint of honeysuckles' bloom; For him forever in the gloom.” Spofford adds a brief inscription to the bottom of the second page.
