American writer (1886–1918), best known for the much-anthologized poem ‘Trees,’ who was killed at the Second Battle of Marne at the age of 31. In part: “I had your name put on the list of the Society with the address to which this letter is sent. I will gladly send you copies of the Society’s membership list as soon as it is published in its revised form. The first edition is exhausted. I liked the poems very much, and hope to have some of them read at the next meeting. I hope you will let us keep them till that time.” Horizontal fold, wrinkling, light toning, and a strip of discoloration along the extreme left edge, otherwise fine condition. Conkling, one of the greatest poets of the early 20th century, surely appreciated the kind words from her contemporary, who was serving as literary editor of The Churchman, an Anglican newspaper.
