Description

At the dawn of his military career, Captain Eisenhower promotes a sergeant in the tank corps

Rare, extremely early partly-printed DS, signed “D. D. Eisenhower,” one page, 10.5 x 8, July 18, 1918. Eisenhower appoints Reuel D. Dennett to the rank of “Sergeant. Co. A. 331st Bn, Tan. Corps of the National Army of the United States.” Signed at the conclusion by Eisenhower, as Captain of the Infantry at Camp Colt in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In fine condition, with a uniform shade of toning, and some light vertical ripples and creases.

Eisenhower's career accelerated as America began to mobilize for World War I. Regular officers in the rapidly expanding Army found themselves briskly promoted and given challenging commands. Already a captain in 1917, Eisenhower was temporarily promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel just over a year later. Unlike some of his peers that distinguished themselves in France, Ike never left the United States, a fact that bitterly disappointed him. Instead, he spent the war training troops, and at the armistice, he was in command of Camp Colt, the Army's tank corps training center at Gettysburg. Eisenhower material from this time period is decidedly scare: this is the earliest example we have seen. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
