Description

Monroe full free frank

Full free frank, measuring 9.75 x 7.75 unfolded, with franked panel measuring 4.75 x 3.25, addressed in Monroe’s hand to “William Dabney Esqr., Richmond, Virga,” and franked in the upper right of the panel, “Dept. of State, Jas. Monroe,” and stamped “Free” below his signature. Top of upper panel is docketed in an unknown hand, “James Monroe, June 22, 1816.” Two vertical folds through panel, one through a single letter of signature, and some scattered light toning and soiling, otherwise fine condition. Several months earlier, Monroe received the presidential nomination after a division between Federalists and Republicans failed to produce a suitable opponent to Monroe. A very presentable example. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
