Vintage matte-finish 7 x 9 Harris and Ewing portrait of Roosevelt at his desk, signed and inscribed in the lower border in fountain pen “For Tom, love from his old friend, Franklin D. Roosevelt.” Matted and framed to an overall size of 12.25 x 15.25. Silvering to edges and darker portions of image and background, and a uniform shade of mild toning to borders, otherwise fine condition.
Roosevelt inscribed this amazing portrait to Thomas Bell Love, most likely while as president, a prominent figure in Texas political life for the first three decades of the 20th century, who served as Texas Speaker of the House and as assistant secretary of the US Treasury. It was while serving in that position—specifically overseeing the Bureau of War Risk Insurance beginning in 1917—that he and then-Assistant Secretary of the Navy Roosevelt crossed paths at the start of World War I, forging a bond that would last for years...all the way to FDR’s tenure in the White House…as evidenced here.
