Description

The Gone With the Wind author welcomes young members to the Atlanta Historical Society: "Generally people have to have a little gray in their hair before they develop a 'sense of the past'"

TLS signed “Margaret Mitchell Marsh,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, August 2, 1948. Letter to Mr. Pattillo. In part: “It was a pleasure to meet you at the Historical Society Sunday before last and I was sorry that the crowd was so great that I did not get an opportunity to talk with you. I regret that you did not meet my husband. He is recovering from a very serious illness, so he sat upon the side porch for a while but, becoming tired, had to go home before the party was over. The Society always feels happy to have new members, for we know people would not join unless they had a genuine interest in Atlanta’s history. We are especially glad when new members are in your age group. There aren’t too many you know. Generally people have to have a little gray in their hair before they develop a ‘sense of the past.’” Letter is removable encapsulated in acid free Mylar. Uniform shade of mild toning, with several heavier spots, as well as some scattered light foxing, otherwise fine condition. A nicely written example of Mitchell’s love and commitment to her home town. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
