Description

Ike names a South Dakota senator to watch over Mount Rushmore

DS as president, signed “Dwight D. Eisenhower,” one page, 20 x 16, March 10, 1960. Eisenhower appoints US Senator Francis Case to a Mount Rushmore commission. In part: “Know Ye, that, reposing special trust and confidence in the Integrity, Ability and Discretion of Francis Case, United States Senator from the State of South Dakota, I do appoint him to be Member, Mount Rushmore National Memorial Commission.” Countersigned by Secretary of the Interior Fred A. Seaton. In fine condition.

Authorized by 1925 by the US Congress to oversee the creation of Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, Eisenhower tapped Case in 1960 to continue federal oversight of the Black Hills monument. A Republican, Case served served for 25 years as a member of the United States Congress—seven terms in the House of Representative and two in the Senate. Before entering politics, the Iowa native was the editor and publisher of several South Dakota newspapers and a longtime promoter of his adopted state who persuaded President Calvin Coolidge to use the Black Hills as his summer White House in 1927. A unique presidential appointment, naming a South Dakota diehard to maintain the tribute to four presidential predecessors. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
