Description

John Brough

Politician (1811-1865) who served as the 26th Governor of Ohio during the final years of the American Civil War, dying in office of gangrene shortly after the war concluded. Partly-printed DS, signed “Jno. Brough,” one page, 15.25 x 12.5, July 16, 1865. Governor Brough commissions John Neil “Lieutenant Colonel in the Forty Sixth Regiment of Ohio Volunteer Infantry.” Signed at the conclusion by Brough and countersigned by Secretary of State William Henry Smith. Partial separations along moderate storage folds, scattered toning and creasing, and a circular area of toning over signature from mirroring of seal, otherwise very good condition.
