Draft ALS signed “RR,” one page, 8.5 x 6, dated in another hand August 4, 1967. Letter to Hudson Strode in Alabama. In full: “I’m very impatient to return to Sacramento (as soon as I recover from a bit of minor surgery here in L.A.) I look forward to reading the biography you’ve so kindly sent. Thanks so much. You do me a great honor when you suggest me for such high office. I’m grateful for your good opinion but over awed that anyone should consider me in this regard. Again my heart felt thanks & Best Regards.” In fine condition, with staple holes along top edge, some light wrinkling, and an irregular diagonally-trimmed bottom edge.
Strode was an author and professor of creative writing at the University of Alabama whose best-known work was a three-volume biography of Jefferson Davis, published in the 1960s and referenced here by then-Governor Reagan. The California Republican Party had nominated Reagan as their candidate for the 1966 election and watched as he cruised to victory over the incumbent as he crusaded against ‘welfare bums’ and the anti-war, anti-establishment movement at the University of California at Berkeley. Apparently there were many, like Strode, who believed that Reagan would be well-suited for a higher office...a wish that would come to fruition in the 1980 presidential election.
