Description

"You know how many Sunday schools we have-13-with 1498 children. We bring them for Holy Mass from the slums...you can imagine what the sisters have to do to bring them all"

Early ALS signed "M. Teresa mc," one page both sides, 5.5 x 9, Nirmal Hriday (Pure Heart) Home For the Sick and Dying Destitutes letterhead, March 1, 1956. Letter to Mrs. Winfree. In full: "I can't tell you what pleasure your letter brought. I have been missing you such a lot, but I thank God for all he has done for you & Mr. Winfree. He is very much in his right place-You must also thank God for giving you such a good companion in life. I am so glad the children are having such a really nice time. The change will do them great good. You also were in great need of the change. Your first meeting of the American Women will get on well. Try to have the Sunday School, this really does the little ones good. You know how many Sunday schools we have-13-with 1498 children. We bring them for Holy Mass from the slums - so you can imagine what the sisters have to do to bring them all. We take them to different churches-so it is not so difficult. Mrs. Meek came to see our place & she was very much impressed. She is trying her best to help. The show the H.W.C. had was a great success. Pray for me that I may help as many souls to love God and come closer to Him. I thank God often for giving me the grace to know you. God bless you & your loved ones." After her signature she goes on to add, "I think you will like this prayer." In very good condition, with two small areas of paper loss to right edge, affecting a couple letters of one word, scattered light wrinkling, and several small edge tears.

In 1952 Mother Teresa opened the Nirmal Hriday (Pure Heart) Home for Dying Destitutes in Calcutta. She and her fellow nuns took in terminally ill Indians off the streets and cared for them during their dying days, so that they might be able to pass in peace and with dignity. The noble need, however, was met with some resistance as some feared the intentions of the Christian nuns tending to the non-Christian dying. At one point, residents resolved to have Mother Teresa evicted from Nirmal Hriday, but after witnessing the care administered to the suffering patients inside, said they would carry out their plans only if mothers and sisters in Calcutta agreed to undertake the same service. Her charitable commitment to India was allowed to continue, including establishing 13 Sunday schools, which, as she notes here, "really does the little ones good."
