American politician (1811–1874) and Massachusetts senator best known as a radical Republican and a staunch opponent of slavery. On May 22, 1856, Sumner was famously assaulted and severely beaten in the Senate chamber by South Carolina Congressman Preston Brook. Two AQSs: first one on a light blue 4.25 x 2.5 slip, in full: "Whatever is right must be practicable, Charles Sumner, Lowell 25th April, 155-on the platform"; and one on a 5.25 x 8 of-white sheet reads, in full: "Equality of right is the first of right. Charles Sumner, Senate Chamber, 11th Jan '68." Scattered toning and spotting to both, otherwise fine condition. RRAuction COA.
