Boston-born Baptist minister and academic (1808–1895) best known as the lyricist of 'America' ('My Country 'Tis of Thee'), written while he was a student at Andover Theological Seminary. Ink signature, "S. F. Smith," on an off-white 3 x 1 clipped slip. In fine condition, with a couple of vertical creases passing through his first initial and two ink marks above his signature.
