Oliver Ellsworth

Third Chief Justice of the United States and delegate to the Constitutional Congress (1777–84) who later submitted the amendments which became the Bill of Rights. As a member of the Committee of the Pay Table, Ellsworth was one of the five men who supervised Connecticut’s war expenditures. Manuscript DS, signed “O. Ellsworth,” one page, 8.25 x 4, June 21, 1776. A draft ordering a payment to Major Chapman “Seven pounds thirteen shillings & ten pence for expense of his son’s sickness while a soldier in the colony…& charge the colony.” In fine condition, with a bisecting horizontal fold and light show-through from docketing on reverse. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
