Canadian explorer and ethnologist (1879–1962) best known for his expeditions to the Arctic and for his studies of the native peoples there. TLS signed "V. Stefansson," one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, August 1, 1936, to pulp fiction and adventure writer and Explorers Club fellow member J. Allan Dunn. In part: "Your letter…asks in substance that I give my consent to your publishing in the forthcoming Explorer's Club volume a substantially literal translation of a section of Roald Amundsen's autobiography Mit Liv som Polarforsker…what you request is in essence a promise that I will not sue the Club, the publisher's or anyone connected with either of them, for libel on the score of the publication. That promise I make. I believe in freedom of speech. I have never felt that explorers, any more than chemists, should refrain or be restrained from criticizing each other's work. In the nature of things, they are the only competent critics and the public, in absence of their views, is without guidance." Paperclip impression to top edge, a crease to lower right corner, and scattered light toning and foxing, otherwise fine condition. Roald Amundsen disappeared on June 18, 1928, while flying on a rescue mission; his body was never found. Interesting Polar content as Stefansson and Amundsen were well-known adversaries and competitors in exploring the South Pole. RRAuction COA.
