Description

Elihu Burritt

American philanthropist and social activist (1810-1879). ALS, one page both sides, 7.5 x 9.75, April 15, 1845. Letter to Hobbs Hatch declining a speaking invitation. In part: "I appreciate sincerely the honor which your society intended me in asking me to address them on their anniversary. I wish their vote could make me an 'orator' and able to do justice to the task they invited me to assume. But I am far from being an orator or even a pleasing speaker. I am excessively absorbed in engagements connected with conducting a weekly paper and the reformatory movements of the day." Second integral page bears an address panel in Burritt's hand. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, small hole to left edge, and scattered toning and wrinkling. RRAuction COA.
