American playwright (1888–1953) who occupies a central place in the history of twentieth-century drama. Among his most famous works are The Iceman Cometh, Mourning Becomes Electra, and Long Day's Journey into Night. A four-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, he was also awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1936. Signed book: Collected Plays of Eugene O'Neill Volume I. NY: Boni and Liveright, 1924. Hardcover, 6 x 9, 502 pages. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page, "To Doctor W. J. M. A. Maloney-as a slight token of my deep gratitude for all he has done for the author of these plays both as physician and friend. Eugene O'Neill, Mar. 17, '25 (a good day!)" Also signed a second time by O'Neill on the limitations page. In very good condition, with some scattered toning to first free end page, small separation along back hinge, spine loose but intact, surface loss to two corner tips, scattered toning and rubbing to covers and spine, as well as light fraying to the spine's head and tail. A nice doubly-signed warm presentation, with a subtle nod to his penchant for drink. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
