Description

Tyler and his 1842 embattled cabinet sign together

Large ink signature, as president, "Washington, August 24, 1842, John Tyler," and ink signatures of cabinet members "Danl Webster," (Secretary of State), "J. C. Spencer," (Secretary of War), "H. S. Legare," (Attorney General) "C. A. Wickliffe," (Postmaster General), and "A. P. Upshur," (Secretary of the Navy), on an off-white 7 x 7 trimmed album page. In fine condition, with some scattered light toning, mostly to right edge, and a bit of trivial soiling. An exceptional collection of signatures from the 10th president and his trusted cabinet. However, this cabinet was not Tyler's original cabinet, as 11 months earlier, all but Webster had resigned from their positions, an act that was orchestrated by Henry Clay, in an attempt to force Tyler's resignation. By the end of his term, Tyler would have 21 different cabinet members. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
