Description

“Washington’s signatures I am told are quite common”

Brilliant defense attorney (1857–1938) noted for his role in the Scopes ‘Monkey’ Trial and the Leopold-Loeb thrill-killing case. Scarce ALS, one page, 7 x 10.5, November 28. Letter to an acquaintance. In part: “I am returning the photographs, I have not done much about them, and really do not know how. I am inclined to think that they have no such value as you think. Washington’s signatures I am told are quite common. He was a voluminous letter writer and then he signed the various panels…when soldiers were discharged…I presume the election suited you. It was a good start but that may be all.” In very good condition, with creasing and a few separations along upper horizontal fold, uniform mild toning, and some light spreading to ink in a few letters of text and signature. Unique insight from one of America’s most famous attorneys as he renders an opinion on the availability of another famous American’s autograph. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
