American military officer and politician (1754–1844) and son of Signer Francis Lewis. After rising to the rank of quartermaster general during the Revolutionary War, Lewis served in the New York State Assembly and as governor of that state. He resumed his military career during the War of 1812, commanding the American forces at the Battle of Fort George. Partly-printed DS, one page, 15.5 x 9.5, April 6, 1807. Lewis appoints David Colbin 'a Lieutenant of a Company in the Regiment of Militia in the County of Columbia.' Signed at the conclusion by Lewis.
