Description

“Statements of support from men of good will, such as yourself, are a true inspiration to myself and our staff”

King of Spain from 1598 to his death in 1621. Considered to be a congenial and pious ruler, Philip's political reputation amongst historians has been negative, with some of the period calling him an 'undistinguished and insignificant man’ and a 'miserable monarch.' Vellum DS, in Spanish, signed “Yo El Rey,” one page, 8 x 7.5, March 1, 1608. Phillip writes the Archbishop of Granada. In part (translated): “I received your letter of the 14th of January last and I was pleased to learn of your care and efforts pertaining to the interpretation…of the book that, at my request, had been sent to you by the precentor of your church and which had been discovered in…that city. I give you many thanks, having expected no less of your kindness and religion. Considering my strong desire to see this important matter settled by your hand in the service of God, honor and glory (and for which you in your zeal have worked so hard), I beg of you affectionately to bring about the qualification of the said book as soon as possible…and that you will bring this book and any other books that you might have of this quality when you come here.” In very good condition, with diagonal paper loss at the bottom half of the page leaving the signature and writing unaffected, seal affixed to the reverse opposite his signature, and show-through from writing on opposing sides. A scarce example from the early 17th century. RRAuction COA.
