Imprisoned for murder at the age of 18, Robert Stroud (1890–1963) spent more than 54 years in jail (47 in isolation), where he became a self-educated authority on birds and bird diseases and author of an important reference, Stroud’s Digest of the Diseases of Birds, published in 1942. A self-taught legal scholar as well, Stroud wrote an exhaustive history of the federal legal system. ALS signed “Love, Bob, Robert Stroud, #594,” one page, lightly-lined, 8 x 10.25, Alcatraz prison stationery to which he adds his full name and prison address at top, March 27, 1950. Stroud writes to his sister Mamie from isolation. In part: “I am doing all right and have had no more attacks since that last bad one on the 16th. I told you in my last letter about Marc. I don’t think he will get on his high horse with me again for a while…He has spent about three thousand dollars on my business. Of course, a lot of that was for hotel bills at fifty dollars per day, because he would feel like he was slumming any cheaper place. I told him that I would rather sleep in the park than to spend that kind of money knowing that you were under a leaky roof and trying to eek out a living on less money than he would spend for cigarettes…After we had calmed down, I told him a lot of those things in a friendly manner.” In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds.
