Eminent French artist (1869–1954), most closely associated with the Fauvist movement, best known for his colorful paintings, fluid drawings, and bold, distinctive cut-paper collages. ALS in pencil in French, one page both sides, 8.25 x 10.5, no date. Matisse writes of a recent illness. In part (translated): “I am in the process of paying for something foolish (I've done). Instead of keeping the room for a few days, after my return to Paris, I left. I got a case of tracheitis which tires me greatly. It's without a fever, but I have a head ache...my head has been buzzing. I have therefore been confined for several days. As the weather is very warm, I have not been shivering, but neither have I been too warm.” In fine condition, with few faint creases, tiny chip to the upper right corner, and two intersecting folds with a vertical fold passing though his first name. Matisse paints quite a colorful image—in words—of his health woes. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
