Description

America's most-storied veteran

American soldier (1839–1925) who earned a niche in military history as the only man to serve as an officer in the Civil War, Indian Wars, and Spanish-American War. Though the nearly eighty-year-old Miles volunteered to serve during World War I, his offer was declined by Woodrow Wilson. Original 7 x 12.75 albumen photo by Taber of San Francisco, showing Miles in his full dress uniform, signed in black ink, “With the compliments of Nelson A. Miles, Major General, U.S. Army.” In very good condition, with some light skipping to signature and sentiment, lightly trimmed horizontal edges, light overall spotting to photo, as well as a bit of mild silvering. Only the second Miles photo we have offered, and the first one of this size. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
