Description

Hepburn's 1953 UK driving license while performing on the London stage

Hepburn’s Great Britain and Northern Ireland International Driving Permit, issued on March 13, 1953, 4 x 6.5, 34 pages. Stamp on the front cover indicates that this permit was issued by the Royal Automobile Club of London. The first page bears a 2.5 x 3 snapshot of Hepburn stapled to the top portion of the page, with a red approval seal affixed to lower left corner, and with Hepburn filling out her personal information underneath, printing her name, birth date and home address. A small peculiar caption, perhaps affixed to bottom of the front cover upon the document’s expiration, reads, “Important-This license is not valid in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.” In fine condition, with expected handling wear and cover creasing.

Hepburn was overseas at the time preparing for her June debut in the first London performance of The Millionairess, alongside Robert Helpmann and Cyril Ritchard. The play, by George Bernard Shaw, had never before had a prominent actress express any interest in the work prior to Hepburn, who was shocked by the respectful—but by no means rave—reviews from British audiences. It was during this period that the legendary actress kept this license close at hand, allowing her to travel around town at will, as well as to and from London’s New Theatre. An absolutely one-of-a-kind personal artifact! Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
