His political, philosophical, and ideological roles have made Marx one of the leading historical figures of all time, so it is no surprise that any correspondence from him—when it can even be found at public auction—demands a princely sum. Although the gentleman who received this invitation would have met with a man in physical and emotional decline—a man incapable of the same sustained effort that had embodied his previous works—such an encounter certainly would have been memorable. During this period, Marx provided frequent comments on German and Russian politics but he was slowed by physical ailments compounded by the deaths of his eldest daughter and his wife prior to his own 1883 demise.
