Partly-printed DS as president, signed “Andrew Johnson,” one page both sides, 10.25 x 15.5, September 12, 1865. Johnson pardons a rebel. In part: “Whereas, E. B. Vaugh of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, by taking part in the late rebellion against the Government of the United States has made himself liable to heavy pains and penalties…I, Andrew Johnson, President of the United States of America…hereby grant to the said E. B. Vaugh a full pardon and amnesty for all offenses by him committed, arising from participation, direct or indirect, in the said rebellion…To be void and of no effect if the said E. B. Vaugh shall hereafter, at any time, acquire any property whatever in slaves, or make use of slave labor.” The front of the document has been photocopied allowing for viewing of both sides simultaneously, then matted with a colorized portrait, and framed to an overall size of 34.75 x 21.25. In fine condition, with block of light even toning over the center of the back page and staining from the missing seal.
Citing a Constitutional violation, President Johnson rescinded an earlier military order exempting former slave owners from a general amnesty, instead bestowing upon them special pardons such as the one offered here. In the process, he also delivered ownership of countless Southern plantations to their original owners, despite a promise to give freed slaves title to some of the land. Unique paperwork from a disgraceful time in America’s history. Oversized. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
