Description

Jefferson and Madison authorize an 1805 vessel sailing from the Port of New Orleans—bearing one of the most pronounced Jefferson signatures extant!

DS signed by Jefferson as president and Madison as secretary of state, one page, 20 x 16, March 25, 1805. Four language ship’s paper issued to “Joseph Richards master or commander of the brig called Oliver Wolcott of the burden of 178 29/95 tons or thereabouts, lying at present in the port of New Orleans bound for Liverpool and laden with Sundries as per Clearance.” Signed in the middle, “Th: Jefferson,” and further below “James Madison.” Impressively double matted and framed, with sitting portraits of Jefferson and Madison, to an overall size of 42 x 23.5. In very good condition, with several intersecting folds, some scattered light toning and spotting, and two worn but intact seals. Both signatures are bold, and Jefferson’s is unusually distinctive.

The Port of New Orleans came under America’s authority a little over a year earlier as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In fact, it was the 1802 French closure of that port to US commercial trade that prompted Jefferson to negotiate the acquisition of the port—essential for the protection of the economy profitability of the western states and territories. The brig Oliver Wolcott was one of the many that would use the port to carry out trade. The largest Jefferson signature we have seen! Oversized. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
