ALS, one page, 4.5 x 7.5, February 8, 1840. Letter of apology to Mr. Goulburn. In full: “I am unfortunate again! I am engaged next Wednesday-not only to dinner at home, but to a party at Miss Coutt’s in the evening. I should have written to you sooner, but there was a chance of release from the first of these engagements, which I am sorry to say exists no longer. I cannot tell you how vexed I am.” Central horizontal and vertical fold, one through a single letter of signature, repaired area of paper loss to lower right corner, slightly affecting last letter of signature, paper loss to top edge, a light block of overall toning from previous display, and scattered areas of toning, primarily from adhesive remnants on reverse, otherwise very good condition. Despite the flaws, Dicken’s writing and signature remain very bold and completely legible. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
