Description

Althea Gibson

Sportswoman (1927-2003) who became the first African-American woman to be a competitor on the world tennis tour and the first to win a Grand Slam title in 1956. Vintage glossy 8 x 10 photo of Gibson holding a tennis racquet, signed and inscribed in black fountain pen 'To: Jim Wiggins, Best Wishes, Althea Gibson.' In fine condition, with some small creases largely confined to the edges and Gibson apparently using a different pen for the inscription than her signature and sentiment. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
