Description

One-of-a-kind ‘Captain America’ bowling shoes worn in training by Apollo 17’s Ron Evans

Red-white-and-blue bowling shoes worn in training by Ron Evans every day during his training for the 1972 Apollo 17 mission. Evans was command module pilot, and since his ship was ‘America’ and he was its captain, he called these shoes his ‘Captain America’ shoes. The left shoe is signed in red ink, “Ron Evans, Captain ‘Americ’ [sic] Apollo XVII.” The ink is slight faded and there is a smudge to the first Roman numeral. Accompanied as provenance by an ALS to woman named Mary that reads in full: “These are my ‘Captain America’ shoes that I wore while training for Apollo 17. The name of my command module was ‘America.’ Thus the name Captain Ameria [sic].” Though not flown to the moon, this footwear ‘flew’ on many simulated missions on the ground during preparation for America's last lunar voyage. A humorous and one-of-a-kind pop culture item tied to the last Apollo mission! Pre-certified Scott Cornish and RRAuction COA.
