Description

Upon learning of final Congressional approval of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, President Jefferson extends a dinner invitation to a French representative

Third-person ALS as president signed “Th: Jefferson,” one page, 8 x 5, October 29, 1803. In full: “Th: Jefferson presents his compliments to Mr. Pichon. He meant to be understood the other evening as asking the favor of him to dine here to-day with Messrs Soult & Delile. He did not know till last night that Mr. Pichon did not so understand him. He hopes if he has no engagement he will do him the favor of dining here today at half after three.” Second integral page bears an address panel in Jefferson’s hand, “Mr. Pichon.” In very good condition, with several intersecting folds, two through single letters of signature, scattered toning and soiling, a few trivial brushes to text, and a couple small separations to integral second page.

This Jeffersonian dinner invitation was delivered in the middle of one of the president’s greatest accomplishments—approval of the Louisiana Purchase. As the invitation was sent only to Louis Andre Pichon, France’s charge d’affaires and consul general to the United States, this was undoubtedly a business meeting in which the historic land acquisition was a topic. The Senate ratified the Louisiana Purchase treaty on October 20, with the House approving the measure a few days later. The same day that Jefferson sent this letter, he also learned that the Senate had agreed to House amendments on the deal with the French, which Jefferson would sign two days later. An amazingly historic link to a vital moment in Jefferson’s presidency.
