English novelist and the author of such classics as Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities, and David Copperfield. Check, 7.5 x 3.75, filled out and signed by Dickens, payable to Wages for £16.10.0, February 14, 1870. There is an embossed one penny stamp to right blank area. Three vertical folds, one through a single letter of signature, a bank stamp through a portion of the last name of the signature, small hole to left side, and a thin strip of old mounting paper along back edge, otherwise fine condition.
The end was near for the famed writer when he penned this check. After suffering a mild stroke in 1869 during a series of ‘farewell readings,’ Dickens was forced to cancel all remaining performances. By January 1870, he arranged another series of readings to partially compensate his sponsors, delivering twelve performances from January to March—a period coinciding with this check. The final show took place at St. James' Hall in London. He died in June after suffering another stroke. A desirable memento from Dickens’ last hurrah. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
