Description

Rare Elvis contract from 1965 for the song ‘Santa Lucia’

DS, two pages both sides, 8.5 x 11, July 15, 1965. Popular Songwriters Contract between Elvis Presley Music, Inc. and Presley for the song “‘Santa Lucia’ (Arranged by: Elvis Presley).” Presley receives no advance but will be paid a royalty of six cents per piano copy, “fifty (50%) percent…of all net sums…in respect to regular piano copies…in any foreign country. A royalty of five (5¢) cents per copy of orchestrations…in the United States of America. The sum of twelve dollars and fifty cents ($12.50)…when said composition is published in any folio or composite work,” with Presley receiving 100 percent of the royalty payments. Signed on the last page in blue ballpoint. Punch holes to top edge, expected folds, a bit of scattered light soiling and toning, and some light creases and wrinkles, otherwise fine condition.

A traditional Neapolitan song, Elvis recorded ‘Santa Lucia’ for the 1964 film, Viva Las Vegas. The King of Rock and Roll later included it on his twenty-third album,1965’s Elvis for Everyone. Although his arrangement of the song earned him a profit (thanks to this agreement), the definitive recording of that song was made by Enrico Caruso. A seldom encountered piece of rock and roll history. Pre-certified Roger Epperson/REAL and RRAuction COA.
