Description

Superb original Snoopy World War I ace comic strip playing “Peekaboo” with the Red Baron

Original hand-inked four-panel Peanuts daily comic strip, ink on artist’s cardstock, 24 x 7, October 7, 1986, signed vertically in the last panel, “Schulz,” and additionally signed and inscribed in black felt tip in the top border, “For Tim with best wishes—Charles M. Schulz.” In the strip, Snoopy, as a World War I fighter ace, is searching the enemy skies for the notorious Red Baron, comparing it to a game of hide-and-seek, with Snoopy playing “Peekaboo,” in the third panel, and admitting in the fourth panel, “Actually, World War I flying aces very seldom say ‘Peekaboo, I see you.’” In fine condition, with a uniform shade of subtle toning from previous display, and a light central vertical crease between second and third panels. Consignor notes that this strip was displayed at the Museum of Comic Art in San Francisco for their Peanuts exhibit honoring the 40th anniversary of its publication. As Snoopy’s “flying ace” character has long entered the canon of American popular culture—having inspired a hit song, toys and games, and a 2001 postage stamp—original Peanuts strips featuring this most beloved of Snoopy’s “personae” take a place among the most coveted examples of Schulz’s timeless art.
