Description

Uncertain of his future and citing “what Broadwayites call ‘The Seasonal Slump,’’ a 30-year old Newman remains optimistic as attendance rallies

ALS, one page, both sides, 6.25 x 9, personal letterhead, June 14, 1955. Newman writes to one of the founders of his fledgling fan club, Barbara Rushmore, from the middle of a long running production, uncertain about future plans; describes his life (doing a play, going to the movies); and includes a telling comment on his future plans with the Warner Brothers motion picture studio. In full: “Thanks again for your kind note and sorry I took so long to answer–I’m swamped. The play looks as though it will run straight through the summer. (Ach! No air-conditioning BACKSTAGE) We had a pretty rough go of it a few weeks ago because of what Broadwayites call ‘The Seasonal Slump,’ but business is back up to capacity in the past couple of days. So I haven’t got any plans except to stay with the show until February. After that nobody knows–not even Warner Bros. Saturday matinee is as good a time as any–you know how I barrel around–more in real life than on the stage. Thanks for the letter again, and for the picture–Sincerely, Paul Newman.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original hand addressed mailing envelope. At this point, Newman was a thirty year old actor with one film (1954’s bomb The Silver Chalice) under his belt. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
