Description

Speaking engagements and world records sideline Earhart’s automotive-related visit: “The next time I come I hope to be more social”

TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.25, personal letterhead, November 13, 1933. Letter to Roy D. Chapin. In full: “Your letter with the kind invitation to stay with you in Detroit did not reach me until after I returned here. However, my schedule was so rushed I had no opportunity of seeing any of my friends excepting Bill Stout. The next time I come I hope to be more social. On lecture tours one of the most unfortunate aspects is that the speaker must inevitably go on before he, or she, is ready to do so. I hope all is going well with you. Please remember me to Mrs. Chapin and the rest of the family.” Simply matted and framed to an overall size of 17 x 21. In fine condition, with a couple of trivial spots in blank areas.

Chapin was an industrialist and automaker who co-founded the Hudson Motor Car Company in 1908. The company eventually forged a relationship with the famed aviatrix, and in 1932 she participated in the christening ceremony for the new 1932 Terraplane, breaking a bottle of aviation fuel over the vehicle’s hood ornament. Chapin was lucky that Earhart was able to schedule any time for the 1932 event, as by 1933—the year of this correspondence—she did indeed have a rushed scheduled. In addition to the aforementioned lecture circuit, she became the first woman to fly non-stop coast-to-coast across the United States and set the woman’s speed transcontinental record. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
