Description

JFK appointment to the committee overseeing what would become the Kennedy Center

Outstanding partly-engraved DS as president, boldly signed “John F. Kennedy” and counter-signed by Secretary of State Dean Rusk, one page, 22.5 x 18.75, November 14, 1961. An appointment for Samuel Rosenbaum as a member of the Advisory Committee on the Arts (National Cultural Center). Faint toning to extreme edges and slight wrinkling to the edges, otherwise fine, clean condition. The lightly-toned embossed paper seal remains intact at lower left.

Rosenbaum was a leading Philadelphia attorney who served as a Philadelphia Orchestra trustee prior to receiving this presidential appointment. The Advisory Committee grew out of 1958 legislation that authorized the Center’s construction, spelled out an artistic mandate for performances, specified an educational mission for the Center, and stated that the Center was to be an independent facility. Following JFK’s death, Congress renamed the site in Kennedy’s honor and authorized federal participation in construction of the facility, which opened in 1971. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
