Description

Rare portrait of highly decorated British war heroine Odette Hallowes

Allied heroine of World War II, sent into Nazi-occupied France to work with the French underground. Rare vintage matte-finish 4.5 x 6.25 photo of Hallowes wearing her medals, signed in fountain pen, “With best wishes, Odette Hallowes.” In fine condition, with a couple of light vertical creases lightly affecting sentiment. Hallowes was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire and was the first of three World War II FANY members to be awarded the George Cross. She remains the only woman to have received the George Cross whilst alive, all other female GC awards to date being posthumous. She was also appointed a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur for her work with the French resistance. RRAuction COA.
