Description

The Georgia Peach plans “to attend Baseball Hall of Fame annual celebration this year in Cooperstown” in 1955

ALS, one page, 7 x 10, personal letterhead, May 22, 1955. Letter to Yankees executive Bob Fishel. In full: “I am in receipt of a telegram from George Weiss inviting me to attend ‘Old Timers’ day in New York July 30th and George requested me to reply to you, this telegram was sent to me Palo Alto, Calif. which is proper as to my winter address, but the above is where I spend 7 or 8 months of year, hence delay of a couple of days in my replying. First I ask that you convey my appreciation to George for his thought of me.

If nothing unforseen [sic] happens Mrs. Cobb and I will be in New York for this day of July 30th as we had planned to attend Baseball Hall of Fame annual celebration this year in Cooperstown, N.Y. I cannot state just the date I will be in New York City for ‘Old Timers’ day at this time.”

Matted and framed to an overall size of 10.75 x 14. In fine condition, with a red check mark next to closing of letter, and Cobb’s letterhead circled with a notation next to it, most likely by Fishel. Cobb assisted a young player named Joe DiMaggio negotiate his rookie contract with the New York Yankees. Perhaps it is not surprising that Cobb would attend the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955 when inductees included Ted Lyons, John ‘Home Run’ Baker, and DiMaggio. Accompanied by a photocopy of a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA.  RRAuction COA.
