Description

“We lead in military and economic strength but I feel it essential that we lead in spiritual and moral strength”

TLS, one page, 6 x 8.25, personal letterhead, February 15, 1953. The former first lady writes Miss Busby. In full: “America is today the symbol of democracy to the world. We are a great and fortunate country and our people are a great and fine people but we can not afford to be complascent [sic] when the world’s eyes are upon us. We must constantly be trying to improve our democracy and to make it as perfect as human things czn [sic] ever be. We lead in military and economic strength but I feel it essential that we lead in spiritual and moral strength. If people understand this I know they will do their utmost to be a great people and to give to the world the best possible returns.” In very good condition, with light wrinkling, show-through from paste on the reverse, and permanently affixed to a same-sized sheet. Sent shortly after the inauguration of Dwight D. Eisenhower and her own resignation from the United Nations, Roosevelt here still reveals her unwavering commitment to the United States as a symbol of democracy. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
