Although successful in a number of Civil War battles, he is best remembered for two attributes: the similarity of his name to that of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his murder of a superior officer during an argument in the Civil War. Handwritten endorsement, “Approved, Jef C. Davis, Brig Genl, Jan 25 [1864],” on a 27.5 x 17 Muster Roll for Davis’s Army of the Cumberland for January 1864. Muster roll lists the officers and soldiers, horses, and transportation.
