Description

Rare one-cent Hoover check sent to the American Numismatic Association president

Extremely rare Guaranty Trust Company of New York bank check, 6.25 x 2.5, filled out in another hand and signed by Hoover as commerce secretary, payable to Waldo C. Moore for $.01, August 1, 1921. Attractively and archivally double cloth matted with a portrait of Hoover and framed to an overall size of 13.5 x 20. In fine condition, with the check machine-imprinted “One Cents” on the appropriate line. Hoover was serving in Warren G. Harding’s cabinet when his check was gifted to Moore, who was then the president of the American Numismatic Association. The uncashed penny check was the collector’s unique way to secure Hoover’s signature and then—as now—is equally desirable to both numismatists and autograph collectors. Hoover checks available in the hobby market number in the single digits. This particular check originally sold at Christie’s in 1999 for $6,000. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
