Description

Seldom-seen Fillmore check during his tenure as president of the Buffalo Historical Society

Very scarce Buffalo Savings Bank check, 7 x 2.75, filled out and signed by Fillmore, “Millard Fillmore Prest.,” payable to Frances P. Murray for $35.58, January 10, 1871. Notation along top edge reads “Law Library County Contingent Fund.” Archivally cloth matted and framed with a seated portrait of Fillmore to an overall size of 15 x 20.5. In fine condition, with two small pinholes to center and some light soiling to lower right. In his post-presidential life, Fillmore served as the first president of the Buffalo Historical Society (renamed the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society a century later). It was while serving in that capacity (judging from the added presidential identifier penned beneath his name) that Fillmore signed this document. Checks signed by Fillmore are remarkably difficult to find, with this being one of only two made available at auction in the past 30 years. This particular check last sold in 2005 at Christie’s for $8,000. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
