Scarce partially printed Massachusetts Bank check, 4.5 x 1.75, filled out and signed by Adams, payable to John Adams Welsh for $100.00, dated 1815. Ornately and archivally double cloth matted with a color likeness and framed to an overall size of 13.25 x 19. In fine condition, with light soiling and two cancellation punch holes.
The parents of the recipient of this check, Thomas and Abigail Kent Welsh, were among the closest friends of John and Abigail Adams—a friendship that began in the 1780s and lasted through the 1820s. When their last son was born in 1792, he was baptized John Adams Welsh—after the couple’s dear friend, the second US president. During the late 18th and early 19th centuries partially printed checks were not yet commonly used, and checks of that era were usually entirely completed by hand, more closely resembling promissory notes. As such, partially printed examples of early presidents are significantly rarer than their manuscript counterparts. A very rare check, one that is among the most well-preserved examples we have ever seen. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
