TLS signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 5.5 x 8.25, personal letterhead, July 15, 1908. Letter of thanks to Reverend Charles Butler, Secretary of Luther Place Memorial Church. In full: “I have the paper that you have enclosed to me, in which a number of the ministers of Washington have sent me their congratulations on my nomination and in which they point out the importance of Sunday observance. I hope that you will express my thanks to each one of these gentlemen for the kindly tone of their communication, and assure him that nothing on my part will ever be done which may be construed as a lack of respect for such a view of the subject.” In very good condition, with central horizontal and vertical fold, one through a single letter of signature, a uniform shad of toning, and a slightly fuzzy appearance to signature. The previous month, Taft had secured the Republican nomination in Chicago, and would go on to firmly defeat William Jennings Bryan. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
