Description

Keller comforts Carrie Jacobs-Bond by referencing Tennyson: “All of love in all of life has happened when we cross the Bar”

Signed book: Peace at Eventide. First English edition. London: Methuen and Company, 1932. Softcover, 4.25 x 6.5, 46 pages. Signed and inscribed in pencil on the second free end page to composer, lyricist, and poet Carrie Jacobs-Bond, “To Carrie Jacobs-Bond, All of love in all of life has happened when we cross the Bar. Helen Keller.” Jacobs-Bond has also underlined several passages inside the book. In very good condition, with partial separation along front hinge, light creasing and wear to spine, and some scattered light soiling to covers. Book is housed in a custom hardcover clamshell case.

Keller’s inscription alludes to Alfred Lord Tennyson’s ‘Crossing the Bar’ (1889) in which the British poet laureate describes his placid and accepting attitude toward death, concluding, “I hope to see my Pilot face to face / When I have crossed the bar.” An attractive copy with a lovely and meaningful sentiment. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
