In the midst of Reconstruction, Johnson pulls strings for a military appointment “in any of the old regiments … if it can be done without interfering with any of the recommendations which I have already made”

LS as president, one page, 4.75 x 7, Executive Mansion letterhead, August 15, 1866. Letter to an unknown recipient, most likely his Secretary of War. In full, “Mr. Abrams is an applicant for an appointment in the Army of the United States, and is highly recommended. If there is a vacant Lieutenancy in any of the old regiments, the Secretary of War will please confer the appointment upon Mr. Abrams, if it can be done without interfering with any of the recommendations which I have already made.” In fine condition, trimmed in size, with two vertical mailing folds, one through a single letter of signature, and lightly trimmed edges.
